P.E.T.s PROGRAM
The P.E.T.s program is dedicated to humane
education and focuses on teaching children about animal awareness,
care and safety and a literacy assistance program where children build
their reading skills and confidence by reading to our dogs.
Children ranging from
preschool to high school receive an educational opportunity to not
only learn ways to properly and responsibly care for their own pets,
but to also interact with rescue dogs from New Leash On Life and see
first hand the benefits of shelter rehabilitation and training. By
visiting classrooms and educational venues, children experience first
hand the benefits of rescuing and caring for a homeless animal.
Furthermore, children have the opportunity to learn life-saving safety
techniques when meeting a new or strange dog.
At New Leash On Life,
it is of extreme concern and priority that both child and animal
interact with one another in the safest way. According to statistics
at DogBiteLaw.com, “The vast majority of biting dogs (77%) belong to
the victim's family or a friend.” Statistics also
show that the odds of the bite victim being a child under the age of
10 years are 3.2 to 1. Strategies including how to approach a strange
dog by reading its behavior and body language to learning about the
immense responsibility of owning a pet are presented in fun and
creative ways such as coloring books, movies, and interacting with
NLOL dogs. At New Leash On Life, we believe in breaking down the
language barrier between human and dog so that dog ownership is a
pleasurable experience for everyone involved. We hope to ensure the
dog stays with the family it loves and out of the shelter.
Our goal is to provide
the public with an understanding of the importance of spaying and
neutering in an ever-increasing overpopulation of stray pets. We also
hope to instill the benefits of dog obedience training and the
positive effects it has on both animal and human. By demonstrating
various training techniques and offering behavioral education, it is
our hope that those considering the relinquishing of their current pet
will ultimately opt to continue to provide their animal companion with
love and compassion.
New Leash On Life is
dedicated to rescuing those dogs who need it most. By incorporating
the public into our efforts, we are sure to make a positive impact not
only for ourselves, but most importantly for those rightfully known as
Man’s Best Friend.
