LEND A PAW
The Lend a Paw program is designed to rescue dogs from the shelter and train them to be companion social/therapy dogs.

How It Works

• Lend a Paw trainers and New Leash On Life staff, skilled in obedience and temperament testing, will select dogs from the shelter.

• We are currently working on a program to enter all dogs into a three week comprehensive obedience training program. (Note: New Leash On Life will also continue to rescue older dogs or dogs with injuries or illness. In these cases, some dogs may be put up for adoption without training.)  Dogs that we recognize might do well as Lend a Paw dogs are always put into the three week training program.

• At the end of the 3 weeks, the LAP trainers and Program Manager will evaluate each dog and determine its level of competency. A majority of the dogs are not expected to be chosen for the LAP program, but instead will be placed in the Adoption Program fully obedience trained and ready to go to a loving home. This is also unique to rescue groups, but helps to guarantee an easier transition into its new home while ensuring a permanent placement. The new parents will also go through training to learn to maintain the dog’s good manners and obedience training.

• The dogs who exhibit the temperament required and the ability to learn more complex behaviors will move on to begin training to become Social/Therapy dogs. Once this training is complete, the dog will be ready to be matched up with a family in need of a Social/Therapy dog.
